Ukraine deploys UK-supplied Storm Shadow missiles in strikes on Russia for the first time.
The Storm Shadow missile, also known as SCALP-EG (Système de Croisière Autonome à Longue Portée – Emploi Général), is a long-range, air-launched cruise missile developed jointly by the United Kingdom and France. Designed by MBDA, it is renowned for its precision, advanced technology, and effectiveness against high-value, heavily defended targets.
Primarily used by NATO forces, the Storm Shadow has a range of approximately 250 kilometers (155 miles), allowing it to strike deep into enemy territory while keeping launch aircraft at a safe distance. The missile is equipped with a BROACH warhead, which combines a penetrator and blast capability to destroy bunkers, command centers, and other fortified structures.
One of the standout features of the Storm Shadow is its terrain-following capability, allowing it to fly at low altitudes and evade radar detection. It uses GPS and inertial navigation for guidance, along with a high-resolution imaging infrared seeker for terminal precision targeting.
The missile has been deployed in various conflicts, including operations in the Middle East, where it demonstrated its effectiveness in precision strikes. In 2023, it gained renewed attention when the UK supplied these missiles to Ukraine, marking a significant escalation in military support amid the ongoing conflict with Russia.
